Q&A: filing 2 state taxes - how is the tax calculated?

Question by avatar: filing 2 state taxes – how is the tax calculated?
I lived and worked in 2 different states last year. Jan to Sept in one state and the rest of the year in another state. At what rate are the taxes calculated? Is that based on residency and non-residency status? Also, would you recommend using a tax software or going to tax professional such as HR Block in this case?

I imagine they would be calculated separately for each state and probably is limited to what you earned in each individual state. You may avoid paying to more than one state. Chk with a professional.
