If I were to notify the IRS about someone who cheated on their taxes...how soon will they be audited?

Question by Niki: If I were to notify the IRS about someone who cheated on their taxes…how soon will they be audited?
This person was going to the same accountant for 10 years but for 2007 taxes he went to someone new. This new accountant found out the old accountant was adding in false deductions (charity, business expenses, etc..) without the person’s knowledge or consent. Now he is being audited. He has been going to this accountant for 10 years.

What’s interesting is that he is being audited for 2005 and 2006 (and probably 2007 in a few weeks) and these just happen to be the files he showed the new accountant. On the other hand, he purchased a house in 2005 and made a lot more money in 2005 than he did in 2004.

So the question is, how long will it take for someone to be audited if an accountant or someone else “tipped” the IRS? He is trying to figure out if the new accountant did this.

If it is over a million in back taxes owed, very quickly. Less than a million I believe the waiting list is about seven years long.
